Why should I participate in research?
Having families participate in autism research is the only way that scientists can keep looking for answers to the many questions we all have about autism. Researchers may want to contact you as a parent/guardian or individual related to those with autism to take part in a research study but you can also seek out research studies that you may be able to take part in. You should, however, be aware of what is involved in taking part in a research study. The OAR Parent’s Guide to Research (Appendix B, page 47) includes tips on how to determine whether a certain research study is right for you. Prior to participating in a research study, always be aware of everything that is involved in the study, the potential benefits and risks, and how to understand the results.
Questions to ask a researcher include:

What will I learn about my child or myself as a result of this study?

What changes will my child or I have to make by participating in this study?

How long will this study last?

Has this study been reviewed by an Institutional Research Review Board (IRB)?
- Will I receive a copy of the results or the resulting publication?
