Moving Beyond ‘Tell Me What You Want’: Developing Functional Mand and Tact Repertoires with High-Tech AAC (ASHA credits): JFEV Mar 2025

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who use high-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) often face challenges in developing functional communication skills that extend beyond simple requests. This workshop addresses the need for effective strategies to teach mands and tacts that foster independent, meaningful communication. Participants will explore the conceptual basis of mand and tact training as it applies to high-tech AAC, understanding how these foundational skills support broader communication outcomes. Evidence-based practices will be discussed, with a focus on prompting techniques, reinforcement strategies, and program considerations that encourage spontaneous, generalized language use. Attendees will gain practical insights for designing individualized training programs that promote independence and communication flexibility across various contexts and partners. This workshop offers valuable guidance for behavior analysts and speech-language pathologists seeking to build robust, functional communication repertoires for their clients with ASD.
