Acknowledging Trauma and Supporting LGBTQ+ Individuals

LGBTQ+ individuals often experience trauma due to high rates of rejection, discrimination, and harassment. This session will include discussions about the causes of trauma within the LGBTQ+ community, potential challenges that exist, statistics on disparities, how to be supportive to combat and eliminate disparities, and resources.

Trainer – Amy D’Arpino, BSW

Amy has worked in the social work and healthcare fields for 25 years. She is the Cultural Competency Specialist for Arizona Complete Health, which is a subsidiary of Centene Corporation. Previously, Amy worked in various capacities in behavioral health and foster care. She participates on local and state-wide focused committees that have priorities to eliminate health disparities for underserved populations. Amy is a parent of a transgender teen and is an alumni member of the Human Rights Campaign’s Inaugural Parents for Transgender Equality Council, a coalition of the nation’s leading parent-advocates working for equality and fairness for transgender people. She is currently Co-Chair of the Annual Let’s Get Better Together Conference, which focuses on LGBTQ integrated health. Amy is the Co-Chair of the cPRIDE Innovation Committee, a Centene Employee Inclusion Group focused on experiences of Centene’s LGBTQ+ employees. She has presented workshops at many local and national conferences. She received her Bachelor’s in Social Work Degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University. Amy is a strong advocate for change, and for anyone in need.
