Liberty Resources: Arts Transit Accessibility Audit

Hosted by Liberty Resources

Art-Reach and Transit Forward Philadelphia are bringing together people who care about accessibility, public transportation, and the arts to document the accessibility and condition of bus stops near Center City’s cultural destinations. The information collected will help identify barriers and support recommendations to improve accessibility and safety for SEPTA riders.

What is a transit accessibility audit?

A transit accessibility audit is a way to evaluate how accessible a bus stop and the surrounding area are for people with disabilities and other transit riders. Participants will use an online form to document features such as:

  • Bus stop signage
  • Curb cuts
  • Crosswalks and pedestrian signals
  • Audible crossing signals
  • Landing pads for wheelchair ramps
  • Tactile paving
  • Seating
  • Other accessibility and safety features

No previous experience is needed. You’ll work in small groups and receive instructions before heading out to complete the audit.

Why does this matter?

Accessible transportation is essential for people with disabilities to participate fully in their communities. Safe and accessible bus stops make it easier for people to get to work, school, medical appointments, cultural destinations, and other important places. By participating, you’ll help collect information that can be used to advocate for a more accessible transit system.

What to expect

The event will begin at the Creative PHL Office and Gallery, City Hall, Room 116, where participants will receive an overview before splitting into small groups to visit nearby bus stops. After completing the audits, everyone will return to City Hall for a brief debrief and an opportunity to connect with fellow advocates.
