Milestone HCQU West: Diagnostic Overshadowing of Psychological Disorders in People with Intellectual Disability

Hosted by the Milestone Health Care Quality West (HCQU).

This presentation will cover the history of the diagnostic overshadowing bias as it relates to psychological disorders in ID and will review past and present research as well as the current state of our knowledge about this bias.  Other applications of diagnostic overshadowing will also be discussed, including medical conditions, treatment recommendations, and clinical implications for your own practice.

Dr. Kristin Dell’Armo is a licensed psychologist with a focus on intellectual and developmental disabilities.  She is a clinical assistant professor at the Ohio State University and a psychologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Milestone is a community-based nonprofit organization that provides a continuum of support, treatment, and residential and vocational services to individuals with behavioral health challenges, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities. The Milestone Health Care Quality Units serve 18 western Pennsylvania counties by providing training to developmental disability providers, thus setting the standard for care.
