Formative Assessment: Monitoring the Progress of Students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)


Progress monitoring is the ongoing process of collecting and analyzing data to determine student progress toward attainment of educational goals. This fact sheet, available on the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network's (PaTTAN's) website, outlines the seven steps of progress monitoring.

The Seven Steps of Progress Monitoring

  1. write annual goals and objectives
  2. make data collection decisions
  3. determine data collection tools and schedule
  4. represent the data visually
  5. evaluate the data
  6. make instructional adjustments
  7. communicate progress
