The prevalence of autism among transgendered individuals is higher than in the general population. The new guidelines affirm the rights of individuals with autism to receive treatment for gender dysphoria, but the experts disagree on the best time to initiate treatment. Young adults diagnosed with autism as children with gender dysphoria are an underserved population. There is a need to understand the normal course of gender development for people with autism first.
