What is Discord?

Overview

This resource explains the online platform called Discord.

Discord is a free, online platform. Users can create servers that focus on any shared interest or community. A server is an online space or “room.” For example, there could be a server all about “videos games” or one for “students.” Each server can also have multiple channels. This means you could have different areas to talk about different topics.

There are multiple options for talking to others in these rooms. Some can be text only or have voice messages or video sharing options. Users can also direct message and send friend requests to each other. This allows you to talk keep in touch without using a server. Some of these rooms can be open to anyone who uses Discord. Some of the groups require a link to join. Some groups are completely private.

The person who creates a server can control who’s able to join the group. The creator can also choose what they’re able to do and what channels they can join. Creators can even create roles for members. “Roles” are like ranks or duties. These roles can be assigned by the creator or sometimes members can pick their own roles. Members with a role stand out from other users. Members with a role are also able to do different things in the group.

Why Use Discord?

  • Discord is free, but you can pay for a subscription. Subscriptions have features that give users more options.
  • Discord can be used on any computer through an internet browser. You can also download an app on a mobile device. This means it’s easy to use Discord almost anywhere at any time.
  • Discord allows users to share as much about themselves as they want.
    • You can use your real name as your username or change it to something else.
    • You can use any image for your profile picture (or avatar).
    • You can choose to link your Discord to other social medias like X (Twitter), TikTok, or Spotify.
  • Discord is a popular platform. There are about 150 million users each month and 19 million servers being used each week. This means there are a lot of people to talk to and you can talk about a lot of different things.
  • It’s a great way to meet new people and connect with others online!
