Overview

Created by L.E.A.N. On Us for use by first responders, these pocket cards list the top ten characteristics of an individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder for quick identification.

Identifying Autism Spectrum Disorder

    1. Sensitivity to touch
    2. Sensitivity to sound and light
    3. Repetitive behavior
    4. May not be able to speak/appear deaf
    5. No sense of danger
    6. Have fight or flight response
    7. May not follow verbal commands
    8. Need time to process information
    9. May not know their rights
    10. Appear nervous

 

Tips to Assist Individuals with ASD (Top Ten List)

    1. Remain calm and model behavior
    2. Use simple commands
    3. Extend response time
    4. Maintain space
    5. Explain actions prior to doing so
    6. Use low voice tone
    7. Do not stop self-stimulating behavior
    8. Presume competence
    9. Check clothes/ID for emergency contacts
    10. Be reassuring and advise of situation
