Where to go when uncomfortable

Overview

These resources, part of the Be Safe resource collection focused on the prevention of sexual abuse and assault, is a series of social stories that provides information for individuals with autism on recognizing when they are in a situation that makes them feel uncomfortable, and what they can do in that situation to make themselves safe.

Part 1: Recognizing When I’m Uncomfortable

A boy shrugging his shoulders.

Sometimes things happen that make me feel uncomfortable.

An overwhelmed boy who is thinking about school and bullying.

There can be a lot of things that make me feel uncomfortable.

A boy whose body is shaking. He has his hands above his head, and he's crying.

Uncomfortable can mean my body feels weird or bad.

The boy on the left is sad. The boy on the right is mad.

Uncomfortable can mean I feel sad, scared, or angry.

A boy sitting at a school desk is looking away from his school work.

Uncomfortable can mean I have a hard time thinking.

A young boy says,

I should practice telling people when I feel uncomfortable.

Part 2: Where to go When Uncomfortable

A confident-looking woman with a purse.

I am in charge of my body.

A man puts his arm around a woman with her arms crossed. She says,

If someone is making me uncomfortable, I should tell them to “stop.”

A man says to a woman walking away from him,

If someone is making me uncomfortable, I should try to go into a different room.

A woman walks to her home.

When I am uncomfortable, I should go somewhere I feel safe.

A girl feels safe at home and with her parents.

Two places I feel safe are________ and ________ .

A man asks a girl,

When I am uncomfortable, I should tell an adult that I trust.
