Visting a YMCA - Social Story

Five figures holding hands in the air in a circle.

The YMCA is a community organization focused on healthy living.

Two people exercising, a person playing basketball, and a person swimming in a pool.

Some activities I can do there include exercising, playing sports, swimming, or learning new things.

A man and woman talking to each other.

I can ask a staff member what activities are available at my YMCA location.

A water bottle, shoes, a towel, sneakers, swim trunks, and headphones.

Some items I might bring are a water bottle, exercise clothes, sneakers, a towel, a swimsuit, and headphones.

A locker room.

I can use the locker room to change if I am going to swim or exercise.

A person signing a paper at a desk. There is a gym membership card in the top right corner.

When I arrive, I will need to check in. I must have a membership to go to the YMCA.

A man pointing to a sign that says

Once I check in, I can choose an activity. I might exercise, swim, walk, or relax.

Six images of people working out with different gym equipment and machines.

The YMCA may be quiet or busy depending on the time of day.

Two people talking, a whistle, and a kid jumping into a pool.

The YMCA may have many sounds. I may hear people talking, music, exercise machines, splashing water, whistles near the pool, and more.

A man sitting on a chair. His elbows are leaning on his knees.

If I feel overwhelmed, I can take a break, find a quiet space, put on headphones, and tell a trusted adult or staff member.

A list of rules.

The YMCA is a shared space. I should expect to wait my turn, clean up after myself, and follow facility rules.

A man talking to a receptionist at a desk.

If I feel unsure about something, I can ask a staff member for help.
