DSM V Frequently Asked Questions

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the guidebook used by clinicians and researchers to diagnose mental disorders in children and adults. The new guidebook, DSM-5, contains significant changes to the criteria currently used to diagnose autism, including incorporating several diagnoses (Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) into the single diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The new criteria for ASD are based on research and expert opinion and are intended to more accurately and consistently diagnose children with autism. AACAP has developed a list of Frequently Asked Questions about these changes to help families understand the impact they may have on children with autism.

Early Indicators of Autism Spectrum Disorder

The earliest symptoms of ASD can emerge between 6 – 18 months of age, with reliable diagnosis possible by 24 months. These symptoms are developmental “red flags” and do not necessarily mean your child has ASD but you may want to contact your child’s doctor if you notice these symptoms in your child.

Early Intervention in Philadelphia

Early Intervention (EI) is a free service and support for families who have a child or children 0 - 5 years old with developmental delays. Services can take place at home, preschool, day care or Elwyn site. These programs are funded by the Office of Child Development and Early Learning. Services are only available for those who qualify.
